The hydrangeas are loved plants in the gardens, but three frequent errors in autumn and winter risk compromising their future flowering: find out what they are and how to avoid them to have healthy, luxuriant and spectacular hydrangeas also next year.

Ortensias are often considered robust, yet their delicacy during vegetative rest should not be underestimated. Small mistakes committed at this stage can determine the loss of subsequent flowering. It is not uncommon to believe that they resist everything, but the reality is that apparently secondary details decide their vitality. It is worth dwelling on these aspects because between an anti -aggregate bare and a charge of flowers there is only the difference in some precautions.
Before acting, it is always better to observe the plant. Each hydrangea reacts based on the ground, climate and exposure. Taking time to understand its state allows you to intervene in a targeted way, without errors that could cost dearly. Sometimes there is really an extra glance to save the flowering of the following year.
Do not prune the hydrangeas at the wrong time
One of the most common mistakes concerns the early or drastic pruning. Macrophylla hydrangeas bloom on the branches of the previous year and if these are eliminated, the following year the flowers do not appear. You think you “help” the plant, but you risk compromising it. The right period to prune varies: some varieties prefer an intervention at the end of winter, others require only the removal of dry flowers in autumn, leaving the main branches intact. It is a detail that changes everything.
It is not necessary to intervene invasively every year. Often it is enough to lighten the hair by eliminating weak or damaged branches. Thus the natural form is maintained and a more generous flowering is stimulated.
Protect the hydrangeas bad from the cold
Many believe that hydrangea resists without problems in every winter. In reality, the frozen and intense frost They damage the gems and prevent flowering. The most frequent error is to neglect this protection, thinking that the plant defends itself. The damage, however, emerge only months later, when the flowers do not appear.
Protecting does not mean suffocating with nylon or waterproof covers. On the contrary, small attention is enough, such as:
- Create a mulch with dry leaves or straw
- Cover the hair with breathable sheets
- repair the vases in more protected corners
They are simple but decisive gestures. The cold leaves no immediate signs, yet it is precisely at night that it can compromise flowering.
Forget to treat the ground
Another common lightness is Do not correctly feed the ground. Ortensias need rich, fresh and drained soil. After months of flowering, the plant has consumed a lot of energies: if the ground is not enriched, the spring recovery will be weak.
The secret is not just water. It is important to integrate fertilizers rich in potassium and phosphorus, avoiding excesses of nitrogen that develop leaves at the expense of flowers. The pH also counts: too calcareous soil blocks the absorption of nutrients. In these cases, peat or iron sulphate help to restore balance.
The ground is the basis of the life of the plant: neglecting it means condemning hydrangea to a less lush future.
Avoiding these three errors – wrong pruning, protection inadequate from the cold and neglected soil – the hydrangeas will have more chances of flourishing with intensity. A few targeted attention is enough to secure abundant blooms and spectacular colors.
The beauty of the next season already depends on what is done today.
