- Trump claims that this name has a stronger and better sound.
- The new name could be used immediately after signing.
US President Donald Trump should sign a decree on Friday, which is renamed the Ministry of Defense to the Ministry of War. The White House confirmed for DPA, TASR informs. This name was used from the establishment of the United States until 1949, when the change was approved by Congress. It is currently unclear whether the new ministry name will be used immediately after signing the decree.
Trump came up with the idea of renaming the Ministry of Defense to the Ministry of War at a press conference in an oval office in August. In his words, such a name “sounds better”. “Previously, it was called the Ministry of War and it had a stronger sound,” Trump said. “We want a defense, but we also want an offensive … as the Ministry of War we won everything and I think we have to return to it,” explained.
DPA recalls that since joining the second term of office Trump is trying to present as a peacemaker and several countries have already nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. It often recalls that they have already completed seven wars since returning to the White House. Trump’s government often refers to the principle of enforcing “peace through force”, which was applied, for example, in June, when the US attacked the Iranian nuclear facilities to support its close ally Israel.
The US Department of War has existed since 1789 and the change to the Ministry of Defense has gradually occurred, Starting with the National Security Act of 1947, which combined ground, naval and air forces into one organization. The amendment to the 1949 Act officially introduced the current name.
