Professional choice does not always translate into daily enthusiasm. Many work only to pay bills and face the routine disconnected. But a recent study came to show that there are professions capable of offering something rarer: happiness. And surprisingly, they are not the highest paid.
According to New Scientist International Science and Technology Magazine, researchers in Estonia have analyzed the professional life of 59,000 people in 263 different careers. The study included salary, personality, degree, and even clinical examinations. The goal was to identify which works contribute most to well-being.
The results were clear: it is not the salary who dictates satisfaction. The decisive factor is in the sense of purpose.
Professions linked to care and writing lead
According to The Body Optimist Lifestyle and Welfare website, the most linked professions to other people’s care and the writing stood out as the most rewarding. Doctors, nurses, caregivers or writers revealed to feel fulfilled even with high demands.
Also the clergyman activity came up at the top. The common denominator seems to be the human impact, the vocation and the perception of social utility.
Less satisfactory work
In the opposite direction, functions in areas such as kitchens, warehouses, transport and call centers were identified as the most exhausting. The lack of appreciation and the high pace of work weigh on the satisfaction of professionals.
According to the study, jobs such as table employees, postmen, security guards or carpenters are among the least enthusiasm awakening. Still, professions such as naval engineers, psychologists, special education and metallurgical teachers have more balanced happiness rates.
When money is not enough
The main author of the study, Kätlin Anni, cited by, stresses that “jobs that offer a high sense of accomplishment are associated with greater satisfaction, and even the less prestigious can be very rewarding.”
This conclusion contradicts the idea that high salaries guarantee motivation. An above average yield is not, by itself, synonymous with enthusiasm. Already the feeling of utility can transform the way each person faces the work.
The value of a job with purpose
Although many face work only as a means of subsistence, there are professions that go beyond the financial return. It is involved in an activity that enriches the lives of others and gives meaning to the daily life is, according to science, the key to professional happiness.
