The Kalashnikov group has announced the mass production of a new weapon: The AM-17 assault rifle, based on a 1973 design, which will replace the AKS-74U rifle used by Russia. “The AKS-74U is not an assault rifle for all men, in the same way as the new weapons planned for Finland. In practice, it is a compact and light weapon similar to a carbine derived from the AK-74 assault rifle,” says Kastehelmi to the publication .
Designed by the Kalashnikov Division and Technology Center, it was developed with the objective of “Comply with the requirements of modern automatic weapons”as the company itself explains in a statement. However, as the expert explains, “it is not an assault rifle for all.”
As it defends the same, this new weapon will be used by Russian special forces, crew of combat vehicles and law enforcement agencies. “In other words, the weapon will be used by soldiers that benefit from a lighter and more compact weapon and do not need such a long rifle for their operations,” he says.
Regarding the RIFLE CHARACTERISTICS AND DESIGN -mainly constructed with a polymer block-it is worth highlighting its telescopic folding cylinder head or its lower dimension compared to other weapons such as the AK-12 assault rifle. One of the differences with respect to its predecessor is that it does not have a uniform box, something common in AK rifles.
“Modern materials can bear this type of use well. They have evolved considerably since the time when the predecessor of this weapon was also manufactured, when the weapons were made mainly made of wood and metal,” adds the expert in reference to the chosen material. According to the manufacturer, the weapon has already been tested on the Ukrainian front.
