Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s measure is part of the offensive against LGBTQIA+rights, after banning the Budapest Parade in June which still occurred with a record number of participants.
The police of prohibited a Planned for October 4 in the city of Pécs, which the organizers describe as the only relevant annual parade of the LGBTQ+ outside the capital community. The measure comes after the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which conducts an offensive against LGBTQ+rights, banning Budapest’s parade in June, which, however, occurred with a record number of participants.
The authorities justified the decision by citing amendments to laws and the constitution approved this year that make meetings that promote homosexuality. Orban invoked “Child Protection” to justify its years campaign against LGBTQ+ rights in this country member of the European Union.
“We will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated. We will not allow our rights to be trampled,” Diverse Youth Network organizers said in a statement, promising to move on with the celebration on the original date. The ban on Budapest Parade was seen as a setback for LGBTQ+ rights in the EU and generated criticism from the bloc leaders.
