The president of A, Nicolás Maduro, made on Saturday (6) an appeal to the government of the to avoid armed conflict in the region of. In a speech transmitted from a military base in Caracas, Maduro called for “respect” to the sovereignty of Venezuela and stated that no divergence between the two countries justifies a military escalation.
The appeal occurs after the White House authorized the slaughter of Venezuelan fighters that are at risk to US ships in the region and, days earlier, announced that they have sinked a boat allegedly linked to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, accused of drug trafficking for the US. The episode left 11 dead, but the American version was challenged by Caracas.
Dressed with military uniform, supervised the mobilization of civil militias and again accused Washington of using drug trafficking allegations as a justification for promoting regime changes in Latin America. He also criticized the US military reinforcement in the Caribbean, which includes more than 4,000 troops and naval vessels, claiming that it is a “threat of invasion.”
Despite the tone of denunciation, the Venezuelan leader adopted a more conciliatory stance by highlighting that he was “always ready for dialogue”. The change contrasts with previous statements, when it came to summon citizens up to 60 years to join the Army in response to US threats. The crisis is accompanied with concern by neighboring governments and international organizations, which warn of the risks of a large -proportion armed conflict in the region.
