For years there were only memories stored in drawers, collections or boxes of storage. Today, some ancient cassettes have become objects of desire for collectors and can reach values that surprise anyone. In rare cases, a seemingly banal tape can yield enough to buy a home.
The return of cassettes
According to experts cited by the Spanish 20-bit Lifestyle News and Curiosities, the rebirth of the cassettes is due to the nostalgia factor and the growing interest in collecting.
But there are conditions that determine the value: the tape needs to be rare, to be in good condition and, preferably, keep the original box intact.
One of the best known examples is The Madonna Collection (1987), increasingly difficult to find and with constant appreciation prices. Already Xero (1997), from the band that would be known as Linkin Park, can easily reach several thousands of euros.
Another emblematic case is The Versace Experience – Prelude 2 Gold (1995), from Prince, which has already been sold by tens of thousands due to the exclusivity of the edition.
Values that exceed expectations
On platforms like eBay, Suddle or Wallapop, and even private social networking groups, some of these rarities reach impressive values.
There are records of cassettes sold for more than 60 thousand euros, especially when it comes to limited editions or exemplary signed by the artists.
However, experts warn that not all old cassettes hide a gold mine. Many ads inflate prices and it is up to the buyer to evaluate authenticity and rarity before investing.
Parallel with vinyl
Explains what the trend follows the same path as vinyl, which has returned in strength in recent years. More than sound or utility, what weighs is retro aesthetics and the emotional value associated with objects that marked generations.
Passion or investment?
For some, rare cassettes represent a business opportunity. For others, they remain only sentimental relics, guarded as memories of an era.
Whatever the case, the market is expanding and shows how once discarded articles can, decades later, turn into real treasures.
