With the first frosts, the annual moving of flowers from terraces and balconies begins to heat. But did you know that some plants do not need it at all? On the contrary. They are often much better outside.
When they cool down, a lot of growers are worried about packing boxes and flower pots and moving them to the apartment, cellar or hallway. But it often harms plants more than help. Not every flower is the same. Some species can handle the winter very well, especially if they have a little protection and the right conditions. In addition, unnecessary movements can cause them a temperature shock, waterlogging or pest attack. Let’s show which plants can stay outside.
Plants that can handle the winter outdoors without harm
Heather and heaths are typical winter stars. They also bloom in the cold months and their fine flowers in white, pink or purple tones act as a small natural decoration. It is important to provide them with a well -permeable soil and not expose them to long -term waterlogging. Otherwise, they really do not mind the cold, on the contrary! In the interior they often wast and dry quickly.
Also known as Christmas roses are able to bloom even at temperatures below freezing. It will last in the containers and on the flowerbed if they have access to moisture and are not drowned in frozen water. The same applies to snowdrops or talcins that look fragile, but are incredibly resistant. Transfer them to heat is unnecessary and often fatal.
The ornaments, skewers or us are, which look impressive is a hoarfrost. Buxus, juniper or dwarf conifers also can withstand frost without any problems. Just place the pot in a protected place and wrap it with jute or textiles to prevent the roots to freeze.
Nature wins, or why plants leave outside
Many outdoor plants during the winter pass into vegetation rest. They need lower temperatures to “relax” and gain strength for spring. In the interior where there is dry, heat and less light, they suffer: they pull out, fall off, or rot. So leave them outside, where nature can handle them better than a radiator.

Plants transferred inwards are also more susceptible to fungal diseases or pests such as spider mites or aphids. In a confined space without natural predators, pests multiply quickly and the plant suffers. Outside, these processes are in balance, and if the plant is healthy, it usually can handle winter without problems.
Leaving selected plants outside means less moving, watering and care. Instead of annual stress you will enjoy a winter garden full of colors and life. And in the spring, healthy and strong plants will be rewarded with beautiful growth.
