But to be in cultural references, lawyers’ behavior resembles a basic idea of Brazilian sociology. Author of the book “Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and the dialectic of cordiality”, ESPM professor Paulo Ramirez states that the posture of defenders before the Supreme has many characteristics of cordial man, a concept developed by Buarque de Holanda in the classic.
Despite the name, cordiality has nothing positive. In the etymological origin of the word, cordial is the one who acts with the heart. Buarque de Holanda understood that the Brazilian’s emotional and affectionate tendency has, over time, served to conceal situations of conflict and the appeasement of violence.
To this end, it has always been common to use a charismatic discourse, affective eloquence and the adoption of hypocritical behavior. In the first week of the coup plot trial, the citation to the mother -in -law and the excessive compliments were very representative of the idea of cordiality, says Ramirez. The lawyers tried to establish affective and personal bonds with the ministers to minimize the accusations.
“The trial of Jair Bolsonaro and the coup dome represents an attempted usurpation of democratic institutions,” says the ESPM expert. “It is an affective eloquence that tries to soften what was an attempt to coup in Brazil.” Cordiality also applies to bachelor’s discourse, which simulates a scholarship, with quotes to various writers.
“We live in a society that lives on diplomas, even if the person in question has not had such an appropriate formation,” says Ramirez.
