Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro promised to defend the country’s sovereignty as they increase tensions due to the presence of US war ships in the Caribbean. He asked US President Donald Trump to be engaged in dialogue to avoid conflict.

The statements, made last night (5), occurred three days after the Trump administration states that in the Caribbean, sinking a boat that would have belonged to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, accused of trafficking drugs to the US. The attack killed 11 people, but the American version was questioned by Caracas.

“Venezuela is always ready for dialogue, but we demand respect,” Maduro said in a military base in Caracas. “None of our differences justifies a high impact military conflict in South America.” The attack has generated reaction throughout Latin America, a region that suffers effects of previous American raids.

Dressed in a military uniform, Maduro supervised a ceremony in which he ordered the mobilization of civil militias and said there would be an “armed struggle” in case of attack.

Washington sent more than 4,000 troops and naval resources to the region, stating that the action targets Latin American drug cartels. American authorities did not indicate an earthly forest in Venezuela, but Maduro denounced military reinforcement as a threat of invasion.

He accused the US of manufacturing drug trafficking allegations to justify a regime change, citing Washington’s decision last month to double the reward for its capture to $ 50 million.
