Of dog in sling to double ride: scooters become fever in SP

There are almost 5,000 scooters in and it is impossible not to cross with one of them in neighborhoods such as Pinheiros and Vila Mariana, where they became a fever. Between compliments and criticism, many have used this mode of transportation to move along the way to work and in times of leisure. Everything goes, from romantic walk to the dog. But the inspection of compliance with the rules is still precarious.

In December, he released the return of scatter rental, a service that had been off the streets since the pandemic. For this, it established a series of rules. Basically, they can only circulate by bike lanes, bike paths and on a top speed of 40 km/h. It is forbidden to travel on the sidewalk and with more than one person. The use is vetoed for children under 18.

In practice, just circulate through the streets to realize that the rules are not always fulfilled. And employees of the two companies authorized to operate the scooters in Sao Paulo, Jet and Whoosh, say they can not charge users who disrespect the regulation of the city.

Even though it is a logical, security -based decision, the ban on sidewalks, for example, conflicts with a financial issue (the cost of rent per minute varies with the chosen plan, but was on Friday between $ 0.39 and $ 1.09).

For example, at 119 Paulista Avenue there is a parking point. If the person activates the lease of the scooter in that place and pushing on foot, as the rule, to the nearest pedestrian range that leads to the bike path, will spend at least two minutes, equivalent to $ 1.50 on average.

There are also those who want to walk in scooter with their children or companions, which is vetoed by the rule.

Romantic and pet

The 19 -year -old Ketria Azevedo and Valdir Júnior, 21, says they were Jet officials who recommended they were pair in the scooter. “The instructors themselves said we could go both of them. The police don’t say anything either,” says Ketria.

Valdir says he has also walked on the sidewalk, right at night, without being bothered. “No one says anything, doesn’t complain,” he says.

The desire to ride a pair of scooter came from their curiosity. “We came over the weekend, saw a lot of people taking it. Then we wanted it too,” says Ketria. “We walked the whole of São Paulo for about three, four times. Walking would be very tiring,” says Valdir, who also cites the price as an advantage.

The report also found that it has used scooters to pass even with the dog. Employee of the administrative sector of a company, Paloma Marcondes Vieira, 42, takes the little Charlote in a sling, on his lap. “She loves a car, but here in Paulista I don’t walk by car. Why not try to scooter? And she loved it. Go quietly. It’s going to be a beauty,” he says.

Paloma says that scooters are a good solution to get cars out of the streets and says that she even used to go to work, but that a recent change has changed this behavior. “I went back and forth, but now they took many of the points,” he says.

Change in points

In fact, last week, many users were taken by surprise by reducing the parking points of the scooter. The municipal administration says Jet “was notified to extinguish sharing stations installed in private places without accreditation”.

In the region of Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, for example, there was not on Friday (5/9) how to stop Jet’s blue scannings, near the subway station that bears the name of the road. The stations are strategic points, which marry the purpose of making this type of vehicle a facilitator of the “last mile”, the stretch that usually people walk between work and public transport.

There is only one parking space left near Avenida Cidade Jardim. The result was a predominance of yellow shoes, from Whoosh, throughout the region.

Currently, JET is permitted to leave pockets parked in 269 stations, while Whoosh has 168. In all, the two companies have 4,881 scale in São Paulo.

Profile

The profile of those who use the scooters has a small variation between the two companies that operate the service in São Paulo.

WHOOSH states that the user in Sao Paulo is between 25 and 45 years old and has a time approximately 15 minutes. According to the company, 40% of trips are made in the daily routine, not just leisure.

Jet says the average age of its customers is 18 to 35 years, with an average 11 -minute travel time. The company states that peak times are the morning and night of business days, when people go to work or school. On the weekends the travels are longer. It also says that 35% use the service regularly with a signature.

Accidental

The firefighters served 44 people who crashed when using scooters in São Paulo this year. In 2024, in the same period, when the lease was not yet available, there were 14 cases.

The city says it has no specific data on scale, because it uses a methodology that focuses on “in the condition presented by the patient and not in the cause of the event”.

WHOOSH says that since the beginning of the service, it has received only four insurance trips since the beginning of the operation in Sao Paulo. In Brazil, the company says accidents represent 0.004% of the 6.5 million trips made.

Jet says it records “about 1 claim for every 100,000 trips.”

What do companies and City Hall say

The city states that scooter operators should ensure the correct use of georeferencing equipment, field teams, complaint channels and educational campaigns. “Failure to comply with rules can generate penalties for companies. Users can be blocked or banned by companies,” he says.

The Municipal Administration also states that the Traffic Engineering Company (CET) “carries out the monitoring and guides users about the circulation of self -propelled individual mobility equipment, as provided for in current legislation”.

The city says that the Municipal Road Use Committee (CMUV) made eight notifications to companies. “Each of them received three warnings to ensure compliance with the rules provided for in the legislation, both in relation to the circulation of safely scooters and about the need to return equipment only in sharing stations,” he says.

Easyjet, Jet’s official name, has also been notified to extinguish sharing stations installed in private locations without accreditation with the City Hall. “Procedure was also opened for the application of fine to Easyjet for non -compliance with the rule regarding the maximum speed of scooters in the first 10 trips, still within the time of defense,” says the city.

WHOOSH says it makes active communication about security rules and works in partnership with public authorities to monitor the use of scooters, also with denunciation channels on misuse.

The company says it also performs educational actions and support to users.

In Sao Paulo, WHOOSH says it has already blocked 1,800 users for infractions and non -compliance with security standards.

Jet states that it has a monitoring team that alerts and guides users in different parts of the city about traffic rules to avoid reckless behaviors. It also develops preventive actions, “besides displaying reels of traffic rules at the beginning of each São Paulo trip”.

The company also states that it maintains an application scoring system in which the user can monitor compliance with the criteria and the safe mode of driving, “in order to stimulate the observance of the well-being of the population.”
