The building collapsed during the recitation of the Qur’an, to which more than a hundred people gathered, mostly women with children. The injured were transferred to the surrounding hospitals, most of which suffered only easier injuries. The owner of the building said that the hall was in operation for only about two months. He added that the number of participants of the recitation exceeded the maximum capacity of 150 people, which could contribute to the tragedy.
According to the Indonesian media, the event again raised concerns about the lack of quality of construction work and security standards in the country. Indonesia has already seen similar misfortunes in the past – for example, in 2022, a three -storey shop collapsed, when five people died.
