Bortoleto added four points with eighth place and reached 18 in the classification – is 16th place.
The duel between pole position, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris marked the beginning of the Italy GP. The McLaren rider attacked the four -time champion and got annoyed with a Red Bull maneuver on the first lap: “What is this idiot doing? First played me on the grass and then cut to Chicane,” he complained on the radio. Norris surpassed, but took the change on the fourth lap. From there, the Dutchman tried to register followed faster laps to open distance from McLaren cars – 4s2 advantage after 15 laps.
Just behind the fight on the tip, Piostri and Leclerc duel for third place. The Ferrari driver raised the Italian fans as he surpassed the leader of the Pilot World Cup, but failed to stay in front of McLaren for a long time and returned to fourth position. He survived the troubled early race, maintaining the grid’s seventh place, surpassed Aston Martin de Alonso, even paired his Sauber to Mercedes de Russell, on the third lap, but could not resist the power of Hamilton’s Ferrari – which had dropped in tenth – and returned to seventh position.
After 20 of the 53 laps, Verstappen led a 5s6 advantage over Norris, who was followed by Piostri, Leclerc, Russell, Hamilton and Bortoleto. The Brazilian came more than 4s7 behind the heptacal champion, but was pressed by Alonso – lost his position on the stop to change tires at the next spin – occupied the 15th and 16th place, respectively.
On lap 26, Bortoleto won a position after Alonso took the zebra and break the car’s rear suspension, which forced him to leave the race. With the stops in the pitches of competitors, the Brazilian reached 12th position. In front, Verstappen led with 6s2 advantage over Norris, who was pressed by Piostri.
With a stop strategy, Verstappen made his pit stop 15 laps from the end and Norris resumed the lead of the race, 5s8 ahead of Pistri and 12s6 advantage over the four -time champion. Hamilton also went to the pits and returned in ninth place. Sainz and Bearman crashed into the curve in an attempt to overtake, but managed to return. Bortoleto attacked Gasly and won the 11th place.
McLaren left the tire change from its cars to the final stretch of the race and Verstappen resumed the lead. Norris’s Pit Stop error caused him to lose his second place to Pastri, but the Australian gave the post at the request of the English team, four laps of the flag – Verstappen, who mocked the change of rival positions, ended first with good advantage. Thanks to the stops and a punishment to Antonelli, Bortoleto gained positions and ended eighth, returning to the scoring zone.
The cars return to the track in the GP of Azerbaijan, the 17th stage of the Formula 1 season, between 19 and 21 September. The race, on Sunday (21), is scheduled for 8am (Brasília time).
