The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, attacked on Sunday afternoon (7) Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF). He said Moraes imposes a “tyranny” that “no one can handle it anymore.” The statement was given before thousands of Bolsonarist supporters in a demonstration on Paulista Avenue on the Brazil Independence Day holiday. Tarcisio attacked Moraes shortly after protesters chant the cry of “Fora Moraes.”
“Why are you (protesters) screaming this? Maybe because no one can handle the tyranny of a minister like Moraes. No one can handle what is happening in the country,” said the governor. Tarcisio’s declaration represents a rise of the governor against the Federal Supreme Court. Despite being next to Jair Bolsonaro on almost all matters, the governor usually avoids conflicts with the Supreme Court. It is seen in Brasilia as one of the pockets who has a good dialogue with STF ministers.
The attack came after Tarcisio began an offensive in the federal capital for the defendants’ amnesty so the Attorney General’s Office points to an attempt by coup to prevent the inauguration of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Among the accused in this plot is former President Jair Bolsonaro, allies and thousands of people who destroyed the headquarters of the three powers calling for military intervention on January 8, 2023.

In his speech on Paulista Avenue this Sunday, Tarcísio said that “we will not accept the dictatorship of one power over another,” repeating the mantra that repeats itself among the pockets that there is an ongoing dictatorship in Brazil. “We will not accept the dictatorship of one power over another. That’s what we need to do, that’s what we need to defend. Enough of abuse, coming. New times will come. We will celebrate again with a leader who will be loose,” he said, referring to Bolsonaro.
“We will no longer accept that no dictator says what we have to do. There is no harm that lasts forever. Good always wins evil,” he added. It was not clear to whom Tarcisio referred to as a “dictator”, but the attack on Moraes, which happened a few minutes later, indicates that he was against the rapporteur of the Bolsonaro case in the STF.
Tarcisio was emphatic in asking amnesty at various times. He said it is necessary because the lawsuit against the former president and his allies “is tied and addicted.” He compared the process to amnesty in 1979 (this one that occurred in a truly dictatorship period, during the government of President João Figueiredo, the last of the military regime). “If we are here today defending amnesty, it is because we know that this process is tied and addicted. This amnesty, as it was in 1979, has to be wide and unrestricted, guarantee of freedom,” he said.

According to Tarcisio, there is no evidence to condemn Bolsonaro. The governor said that the only thing weighing against the former president is the denunciation of Mauro Cid, a helper of Bolsonaro orders during his period as president. Tarcisio, however, ignored statements of heads of the Armed Forces, who claimed to have been consulted by the former president about the possibility of adhering to some maneuver involving the elections. Nor did it mention the draft whose existence neither the former president himself denies, which would deal with the decree of a state of siege in the country, claiming that the electoral process contained flaws.
“What is this story? How are you condemning a person without any proof? What do they have is a single denunciation and the collaborator changed from version six, seven times in three days, under coercion. This denunciation is worth something? A liar.
