Rick Davies, founder and lead singer of the British band Superramp, died last Saturday (6) at the age of 81, after a long battle against blood cancer, the multiple myeloma. The musician leaves his wife, Sue Davies.

Known for his striking voice and characteristic use of the Wurlitzer electric piano, Davies was responsible for some of the group’s greatest hits, which stood out in the 1970s and 1980s.

Formed in 1969, the band achieved commercial success in 1974 with the album “Crime of the Century”, which includes the track “Bloody Well Right”, marked by the sound of Davies piano.

Superrame also also focused on hits such as “Goodbye Stranger”, “The Logical Song” and “It’s Raining Again”, as well as the album “Breakfast in America” (1979), which sold over 18 million copies worldwide.

Born in Swindon, England, in 1944, Davies began his musical career inspired by genres such as jazz and blues, and pianist Ray Charles.

Unlike the smoother vocal of colleague Roger Hodgson, who left the band in 1983, the voice of Davies had a rough and dramatic tone, which became the group’s trademark.

Despite the health challenges that turned him away from the stage, Davies remained active in music, participating in the band Ricky and the Rockets.

His legacy was also kept alive by versions of his songs made by artists such as Goo Goo Dolls and Gym Class Heroes, who were successful in the 2000s.
