President of the Slovak Republic Peter Pellegrini negotiated with Prime Minister Šiger Išib on Tuesday’s visit to Japan on Tuesday. Leaders discussed the preparation of the Declaration on Strategic Cooperation between Slovakia and Japan, Economic Questions and the future of the US Steel Košice, Informs the special newsletter TASR.

Economic issues were one of the topics of the negotiations. “There are more than 70 Japanese companies that employ thousands of employees in Slovakia, and Therefore, it is important that we continue to make Slovakia an attractive place for the business of Japanese companies, which can choose Slovakia for the entrance gateway to the European Union markets, ”said the President.
The partners also talked about the future of the US Steel Fabric. In June this year, Nippon Steel, the largest Japanese steel manufacturer, closed the purchase of US Steel US Steel for $ 14.9 billion (€ 13.02 billion).
“The Prime Minister confirmed that the fate and future of the Košice plant will be decided at the Nippon Steel itself, but of course we must count on the fact that If the factory is to continue to work, it will have to undergo extensive reconstruction, modernization within the framework of decarbonation, What will require really huge investments exceeding a billion euros, ”said the President.
On Tuesday, the President will also meet representatives of the Japanese business federation Keidanren. Representatives of Japanese companies would like to invite Slovakia and organize a mission of large Japanese companies. According to the President, such missions are a great chance of new investment opportunities. Pellegrini is visiting Japan on the occasion of the celebration of the National Day of the Slovak Republic at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, which will take place on Wednesday.
