China blocks 1,200 accounts for disclosing allegedly false news

It is the country with the most internet users in the world

Chinese authorities announced Wednesday the closure or blockade of more than 1,200 social networking accounts for passing the press agencies and disclosing unauthorized informative content.

According to the China Cyberspace administration, among the identified cases are profiles on platforms such as Weibo – Chinese X Network equivalent, blocked in the country -, Wechat or Baijiahao, who used names, logos or images similar to those of official bodies to publish fake alleged news.

The regulator indicated that accounts and unlicensed reports were also eliminated, others who used photographs of state television presenters to reinforce sensational publications, as well as several that, according to the authorities, spread false or defamatory information about companies.

The measure is part of a series of recently launched campaigns to reinforce control over digital space: in July, authorities intensified the supervision of short videos with deceiving content and in February announced the closing of over 10,000 online portals since the beginning of the year.

In recent years, Chinese regulators have promoted several campaigns against behaviors such as richness, “false information”, “inappropriate content” and “erroneous values” on social networks, which led to the closing of thousands of accounts.

China is the country with the most internet users in the world – over 1,100 million – but also one of those that impose the greatest control over ‘online’ content: popular services in the rest of the world, such as Google, Facebook, X (former Twitter) or YouTube, have been blocked in the country for several years.
