Company vice president states that he seeks efficiency reduces diesel consumption and emissions; company develops hybrid locomotive

The vice president of Rumo, said on Wednesday (10.Set.2025) that, despite the high cost of rail infrastructure, the company bets on technology and the search for efficiency to make more sustainable and competitive operations possible.

The statement was made after its participation in the panel about railroads of the seminar “Green Logistics to boost a more competitive and decarabonized country”, an event promoted by Poder360by ABDIB (Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Base Industries) and Moveinfra.

According to Natália, the strategy joins the environmental agenda with efficiency gains that reduce costs, such as diesel consumption, and meets a requirement of the foreign market to maintain the competitiveness of Brazilian products.

“The cost of railway infrastructure is very high. But the railway alone has a lower emission”said Marca. According to her, a single train is able to remove about 280 trucks from the roads. However, to build 1 km of highway requires R $ 8 million. The same railway distance costs $ 27 million.

The executive stated that the company invests in systems that make the operation more efficient, which has a double benefit: “There is a decrease in diesel consumption, which is the main input. It is cheaper on the one hand, which allows you to invest, and emits less ”.

Marca said the ESG (environmental, social and governance) agenda is both a requirement to have competitiveness in the foreign market and a consequence of the search for efficiency.

To avoid the call greenwashing (misleading environmental propaganda), she defended the creation of a taxonomy. “That’s what will describe what each thing has to be. When you have the taxonomy clearly saying what attributes are, you greatly diminish the possibility of ‘Greenwash'”these.

Hybrid locomotive

The vice president of Rumo also reported that the company works in developing a hybrid locomotive as a step 1 for the modernization of the fleet. About the West Mesh contract, said the company is “FINAL PROCEDURES” negotiation for the closure of the bond, which ends in June 2026.

The government plans to auction the railroad, which crosses the states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, with investments for modernization, expansion and change from gauge to width. Rumo, as a current concessionaire, may participate in the new bidding process, seeking to maintain part or all of the stretch, if there is interest.
