A broad debate on the new republic, which began in 1985 and extends to this day, leads “the word and power – a critical crossing for 40 years of Brazilian democracy”, a book produced through a partnership of Sheet with the Editorial Record Group.
The publication hits stores in late October, but. “Word and Power” comes out of the Brazilian civilization, one of Record’s seals.
Among the more than 150,000 articles published by the newspaper in these four decades, 40 that deal with the theme of democracy in its broadest sense. These are texts signed by names of the most different profiles, but all of undeniable historical weight and ability to influence Brazilian society.
,,,, ,, and are among the authors of these articles, all published by the Sheet. This first selection also includes texts from all presidents of this period of redemocratization.
From this historical list, there is only one article that escapes from this range from 1985 to 2025. It is a text that, published in 1984, enters the book as Hors Concours.
“Word and Power” is not restricted to the traditional format of collections. Once the initial selection was defined, new contributions were commissioned from 40 authors, reinterpreting the texts prior to the present light.
The indigenous activist, for example, comments on a text by the journalist, published in 1985. The businesswoman discusses an article also from 1985 of (1918-2016), former president of (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo). The economist analyzes a text by the journalist, published in 2017.
As the preface to the book points out, “the goal is to re -context each article, underline the uniqueness of its perspective or to present alternative interpretations and critical counterpoints, expanding its margins of meaning.”
As a result of more than two years of work, “The Word and Power” is organized by, teacher and columnist at Sheetassistant secretary of newsroom and editor of diversity of the newspaper, and special reporter of Sheet.

“One of the most debated topics in recent years in the international political scene is why democracies die. It does not amazed, since in the recent decade we have watched the rise of several far -right movements quite corrosive popcorn worldwide,” he says
“This is not a book on how they die, but about how they sprout, how they create roots, how they battle for light and water, how to fight their pests. Plural like projects of democracies, as well as those of large newspapers or large publishers, incorporates many angles, dissenting vases, varied nuances, errors and hits,” says Machado.
The first release of “The Word and Power” will take place on October 22, a Wednesday, in São Paulo. Then other cities will host events linked to the book.
