After disturbing the Polish airspace by Russian drones, Germany will extend the mission of fighters by three months. It also calls for further sanctions against Russia.
In response to Wednesday’s violation of the Polish airspace, Germany will strengthen its obligations on the eastern border of the North Atlantic Alliance, intensify aid to Ukraine and will work on the European Union (EU) on the rapid acceptance of 19 sanctions against Russia. On Thursday, the government spokesman Stefan Kornelius informed about it, writes TASR according to DPA, AFP and Reuters reports.
“In addition to existing commitments in the Baltic and Poland, the army will expand and strengthen the supervision of the airspace of Poland,” the government spokesman said. The Ministry of Defense said it would double the number of Eurofighter fighter aircraft in the area and extend their mission by three months to the end of this year.
Poland confirmed the shooting of Russian drones at night on Wednesday. At least 19 unmanned aircraft flew above the territory of the Member State of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), three of which were shot down. Poland described the incident as an act of aggression and activated the article of four North Atlantic Treaty.
