“Horrible Day”
New York, the most populous city in the US, is in the midst of a divided election campaign by the city, in which socialist democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani faces former governor Andrew Cuomo and current mayor Eric Adams. New Yorkers will go to the polls on November 4th. Adams participated in the ceremony on Thursday alongside former mayor Rudy Giuliani, the Republican who commanded the city during the tragedy.
Trump repeatedly attacked Mamdani, a naturalized American Muslim and citizen, calling him a “communist lunatic,” while a republican legislator asked his deportation. The socialist democrat leads the dispute with a 22 -point advantage, according to the latest polls in The New York Times and Siena. “It was this horrible day that also marked for many New York the moment when they were seen as ‘The Other’,” Mamdani told The New York Times, referring to the increase in Islamophobic attacks after 11 September.
New York City made a minute of silence at 8:46 am (9:46 am in Brasilia), when flight 11 hijacked crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Then, places of worship throughout the city played their bells to remember the impact, while relatives of the victims read the names of the deceased on Ground Zero. The official dead of 11 September was 2,977, including passengers and the crew of the four kidnapped aircraft, the victims in the twin towers, the Firefighters and the Pentagon staff. This number excludes the 19 al-Qaeda kidnappers.
