This is the second part of the conversation in the 45 degrees on identity policies, wokismo and social justice, with Miguel Vale de Almeida and Patrícia Fernandes

This is the second part of the conversation in the 45 degrees on identity policies, wokism and social justice. After, in the first episode, if they have explored the central ideas of this new vision and their tensions with the classic left, here the discussion advances to more concrete land. The role of social networks in the amplification of these ideas, the difficulty of commitment around themes so loaded with emotion, and the relevance or not of gender and racial quotas are some of the points debated with depth and critical spirit.

Throughout the conversation, Miguel Vale de Almeida and Patrícia Fernandes also confront issues that mark the current public debate: the growth of the populist right, the challenges of immigration in Portugal and the so-called “gender ideology”. With different but equally well -founded positions, both contribute to a rare debate in Portugal, which does not escape the complexity of the theme and gives space to dialogue instead of polarization.

The conversation runs through topics such as the idea of “epistemic authority of experience,” according to which only those who belong to a group can legitimately talk about it, and the way symbols and language became central to new cultural wars. While Miguel draws attention to the risks of transforming the trans issue into a political bogeyman who threatens the rights conquered, Patricia warns of obsession with certain topics that, in her view, are no longer the more central problems, even advocating the hypothesis of affirmative action measures for boys in the school context.

The 45 degrees is a podcast to know more and think critically. José Maria Pimentel – Economist, university professor and curious by nature – talks about the big themes (and not only) with experts and people whose ideas is worth listening. They are conversations without haste, sometimes deep, but always relaxed. New episodes every two weeks, always on Wednesday.
