Brazilians trust the Armed Forces and in the Supreme Federal Court; more in churches than in the press – because, more than on social networks; And definitely, most do not trust Congress or parties. This result, determined by last week, confirms a trend that Latinobarometer research has been showing since 1995.
Here, distrust in political institutions is not a passing thing, but rooted perception.
It is true that this is not Brazilian idiosyncrasy. The phenomenon has been recorded in Western democracies, and a lot of paint has already been spent to try to explain it, without reaching reliable conclusions. But it is also true that, compared in that item to neighbors, Brazil has results beyond the average subcontinent – what disbelief is greater – and it is concerned about countries of scarce democratic experience and enormous political instability.
The genius/Quaest research also shows that the group identified with the former president suspects much more, the press, the congress and the political parties than the supporters of President Lula or than those who do not align with either with one with another.
Disbelieving citizens of the political system has always been among us. In successive research, some of them said they were willing to accept an authoritarian regime, depending on the circumstances, or shrugged as to the type of political regime that the country adopted. Together, they formed the large reservoir that, in the past, irrigated the right -wing populism, from Janio Quadros to Fernando Collor. Its existence did not prevent democracy from working even if its rules from gaining solidity over time.
With Bolsonaro, things changed: for the first time religion, confidence in the forces of order, and distrust in public and private institutions were deliberately mobilized against the democratic system. It is always good to remember: the former president dedicated his mandate to delegitimizing the electoral rules; to spread unfounded suspicions on the electronic ballot boxes; to threaten the Federal Supreme Court and toar the coup if the elections lost.
They attest to the same breakdown by the system of freedoms the failed intention to keep it in power by force; the encouragement of demonstrations before barracks; January 8; and now the Bolsonaros collusion with Donald Trump to press the Supreme Court in the trial of the scammers; the content of the extreme right manifestations on September 7; and the rhetoric of its leaders, on the streets and networks.
Anystying Bolsonaro and his sequeshes, in the name of pacification, will not bring peace: he will give the extreme right to continue exploring for his own benefit the distrust of part of the public in the political system.
Moreover, although politically cracked, the country is not at war; It is the extreme right that attacks democracy. Defending it requires, immediately, to respect the historical decision of the Supreme; In the medium term, politically confine the supporters of authoritarianism.
