Boil water and throw 2 balls into a pot with blackened cutlery

Over time, cutlery made of silver lose their glow and start to black. And it doesn’t matter if we wash them by hand or in a dishwasher – from time to time you will need to clean such blackened knives, spoons and forks. Often, after removing from the dishwasher, they are matte and you can see the stains on them. And although the dishwasher is undoubtedly one of the best inventions of recent years and makes the lives of many people easier, unfortunately in some cases it does not serve our tableware. And how to clean blackened cutlery? There are many proven ways that have been known for generations. One of them deserves special attention, because without scrubbing it will brighten our cutlery. How to do it? Boil water in a pot, add your blackened cutlery and add 2 pieces of aluminum foil wrapped in balls and baking soda.

Cleaning blacked cutlery with aluminum foil

The method with aluminum foil uses the oxidation-reaction. In a hot solution of baking soda, aluminum gives electrons to silver sulfide, reducing it back to pure silver, and oxidizing itself. Sulfur passes on aluminum, and silver regains its original glow. For this task you need:

  • A large pot: such that the cutlery can be completely immersed.
  • Aluminum foil: ordinary kitchen foil is enough.
  • Baking soda: a key component of the chemical reaction.
  • Water: hot, preferably boiling.
  • Soft cloth: for polishing cutlery after cleaning.

Cutter cleaning step by step:

  1. Boil water in a pot.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda for each liter of water.
  3. Add 2 pieces of aluminum foil.
  4. Put the cutlery for 10 minutes
  5. Take the cutlery out of the solution – they will be hot, so be careful.
  6. Rinse them thoroughly under running water.
  7. Dry the cutlery with a soft cloth.
