‘After analyzing the terms of the judgment, it will file the appropriate appeals, including the international level,’ said lawyers

The defense of the former president (PL) said on Thursday (11) that he received with “respect” the decision of the first class of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), who sentenced the former president to 27 years and 3 months in prison in the action of the alleged scam, but expressed “deep disagreement and indignation” with the result.

In a statement signed by lawyers Celso Vilardi and Paulo Amador da Cunha Bueno, Bolsonaro’s legal team said the former president “never participated in any plan, let alone the acts on January 8”.

Criticism of the decision

According to the defense, Bolsonaro did not attack the Democratic Rule of Law and should have been tried in the first instance or by the plenary of the Supreme Court, not by the First Class. The lawyers also held again that there was not enough time to analyze all evidence presented in the process. “The lack of time to analyze the test prevented the defense definitively,” they said.

Penalty “excessive”

In the evaluation of the lawyers, the penalty defined is “absurdly excessive and disproportionate”. The defense announced that it intends to appeal the decision: “After analyzing the terms of the judgment, it will file the appropriate appeals, including the international level.”

Judgment

The first class of the Supreme Court formed a majority on Thursday (11) to condemn Bolsonaro and seven other former ministers and military for crimes related to the attempted coup in 2022. Bolsonaro was considered the leader of the criminal organization that tried to prevent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The convictions include the crimes of coup, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, criminal organization, qualified damage and deterioration of listed heritage.
