OpenAi and its greatest investor, Microsoft, have reached a preliminary agreement on the structure of its partnership, a movement that can pave the way to the artificial intelligence startup plan to restructure, leaving its non -profit status to become a more traditional company.
In a statement on Thursday, OpenAi president Bret Taylor said that the existing non-profit OpenAi will maintain control over a new public benefit corporation and will have a participation of $ 100 billion or more in the company. This stock participation would make the organization non -profit “one of the best -financed philanthropic organizations in the world,” he wrote.
“OpenAi has begun as a non -profit organization, remains one today and will remain – with the non -profit organization holding the authority that will guide our future,” Taylor said in the statement.

The participation of US $ 100 billion, which represents about 20% of the value of OpenAi, is a minimum value and can increase, according to a person familiar with the subject who asked not to be identified due to the privacy of the details.
Microsoft’s shares rose about 2.4% in the trading session extended after the announcement.
Microsoft and OpenAi have been keeping conversations for months about reformulating their relationship, in part to ensure Microsoft’s endorsement for startup restructuring. In exchange for great financial support, Microsoft has the right to incorporate OpenAI AI tools into its products. One of the obstacles to the planned changes of OpenAi has been the role of Microsoft.

In a joint statement on Thursday, the companies reported that they signed a “MOUS Memorandum (MOU) for the next phase of our partnership”. They also stated that they are “working actively to finish the contractual terms in a definitive agreement. Together, we remain focused on delivering the best AI tools for all, based on our shared commitment to security.”
