Margarita Robles, Spanish Minister of Defense, replies that it is surprised that someone like Israeli Prime Minister ‘gets on the luxury of giving lessons to other countries’
The Israeli Prime Minister, accused the Spanish representative, of inciting the genocide against, which provoked on Friday (12) an outraged reaction from Madrid. “I am surprised that someone like Netanyahu, who is committing the atrocities he is committing in Gaza, violating all the rules of humanitarian law, of international law, who even faces opposition within his own country, gives the luxury of giving lessons to other countries,” said the Spanish Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, to the station Antenna 3.
Netanyahu’s office published on Thursday (11) a message on social networks in which he accused Sánchez of making a “genocidal threat” against Israel. The head of the Spanish government announced on Monday (8) measures to “stop genocide in”, hoping to “increase pressure” on the government of Netanyahu. “Spain, as they know, has no nuclear bombs. There is also no aircraft carrier or large oil reserves. Alone, we cannot stop the Israeli offensive, but that does not mean that we will stop trying,” said the socialist leader.
“Spanish prime minister Sánchez said yesterday that Spain cannot stop the battle of Israel against Hamas terrorists because ‘Spain has no nuclear weapons.’ It is a flagrant genocidal threat against the only Jew in the world,” Netanyahu’s office reacted on Thursday.
On the same day, the Spanish Foreign Ministry published a statement that emphasized that “the Spanish people are friends with the people of Israel and the people of”, and in which they qualified Netanyahu’s statements as “false and slanderous.”
The new Israeli accusations occur after a week of strong tensions between Israel and Spain. After Sánchez announced the measures to Gaza, he called for consultations his ambassador in Tel Aviv. Israel, in turn, was no longer ambassador in Madrid since the state of Palestine’s state recognition by the Spanish government in May 2024.
Sánchez is one of the most critical European voices to the military campaign that Israel has held in Gaza since October 7, 2023, in retaliation for the unprecedented attack launched on that day by the terrorist group Hamas.
