Former Defense Minister was sentenced to five crimes and will serve a sentence in a closed initial regime
The first class of the Supreme Court (STF) sentenced, on Thursday (11), former Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio Nogueira to 19 years in prison, in closed initial regime, for the participation in the coup plot of January 2023. The penalty was proposed by the rapporteur of the case, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, and accompanied by ministers Flávio Dino, Carmen Lúcia and Cristiano Zanin. Minister Luiz Fux did not vote.
In addition to the prison sentence, Nogueira will have to pay 84 fine days, with the amount of each day equivalent to a minimum wage in force at the time of the facts, updated until the date of payment.
The former minister was convicted of five crimes, with the following penalties defined:
- Armed criminal organization: 4 years and 5 months;
- Attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law: 4 years and 9 months;
- Attempted coup: 4 years;
- Damage qualified by violence and serious threat: 2 years and 1 month, plus 42 fine days;
- DECLARED OF HERITAGE: 2 years and 1 month, plus 42 fine days.
