The president ofminister said on Thursday (11) that the trial of the criminal action of the ends “the cycles of delay in Brazilian history”. The minister’s pronouncement was held at the end of the session of the first class of the court that condemned former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven allies for the attempt to reverse the result of the 2022 elections. Barroso said the history of Brazil is marked by the institutional rupture and that the end of the trial can end this cycle. “I believe we are ending the cycles of delay in Brazilian history, marked by coup and the breakdown of constitutional legality. I am convinced that some misunderstandings of today will become future recognition,” he said. The minister also assessed that the trial is a “watershed” in the history of Brazil and denied the practice of political persecution against Bolsonaro and the other convicts.
“This was a public, transparent, due process, based on the most diverse evidence, videos, texts, messages and confessions,” he said. The president of the Supreme also said that no minister “leaves happy” from the trial and said that the court fulfilled its institutional mission. “No one leaves here happy today. But we must fulfill with courage and serenity the missions that life gives us,” he added.

By 4 votes to 1, the Supreme Court ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven allies for crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, damage qualified by violence and serious threat and deterioration of listed heritage. Most of the defendants were sentenced to more than 20 years in prison in closed regime.
Despite the definition of the conviction time, the convicts will not be arrested immediately. They can still appeal the decision and try to reverse the convictions. Only if any appeals are rejected, can the arrests be effective.
