In conversation with the young Pan, president of PL recognizes that negotiation around an alternative text will have to be done; Choice of Bolsonaro Substitute for 2026 will be made if project does not advance
PL President Valdemar da Costa Neto told the Young Pan That the party will be open to negotiations around the amnesty text to arrested and convicted of coup attempt after the 2022 elections. He argues that conversations depart from a broad amnesty request to Jair Bolsonaro, but understands that it will be necessary to negotiate a text that is possible to approve. The PL has been defending a broad and general text, which would even make former president Jair Bolsonaro eligible again. Center leaders defend a format that would reduce the penalties of prisoners and condemned, but would not forgive them completely.
Valdemar stated that the decision of the court, issued by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) yesterday, will have to be respected and that the chips will now be betting on the political debate. For the president of the PL, the reduction of penalties to convicts, including Bolsonaro, may be an alternative to prevent the former president from being trapped in a common cell.
Valdemar da Costa Neto also said that a possible replacement for Jair Bolsonaro in the 2026 elections will be discussed if the amnesty project does not advance. He expects a conclusion around the proposal to take place within 30 days.

What do you expect about the former president’s punishment? Are you going to try he gets stuck at home?
We have to respect the court decision. What we are going to do now is to work the amnesty, so that a full amnesty is given. They will want to discuss the kind of amnesty that will give to Bolsonaro. Of course we want Bolsonaro to be a candidate, he doesn’t deserve to be arrested, but this will be discussed now. It will be a war inside that we are already prepared to face. We already have the PP, União and we will talk to Republicans. We have a majority for that.
An alternative text has been mentioned by center leaders, with feather reduction, for example. Is it possible to negotiate an alternative text?
I have no doubt, we have to negotiate, it will be a political decision. We now have the political part. You have to negotiate a text that we can approve, the political part.
Do you have to be open to dialogue?
Yes, and we hope to solve this within 30 days in the House and Senate.
The reduction of penalties would be possible, then?
We have to see the final understanding. We will war for a wide amnesty.
You evaluate, mentioned in a previous conversation with us, that Bolsonaro would define his replacement in the 2026 elections after the trial. Will you have this conversation with him?
Bolsonaro will only manifest when this process end. In court has already closed, now let’s see the political part.
So if the amnesty does not advance, will they start discussing a replacement?
Have no doubt, but who will define this is Bolsonaro. If so, he will choose the candidate for president and vice president. If so. He will solve the road after the definition of amnesty.
