The United States may implement new sanctions on the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) against Brazil next week, according to an analysis by former US Substatement Jana Nelson.
The measures appear at a time of, especially after recent decisions of the Supreme Court (STF).
Possible scenarios
According to Nelson, there are three probable scenarios for sanctions.
The first and simplest involves visa restrictions, a measure that directly affects those who want to enter the United States.
The second scenario includes financial sanctions, similar to those already applied to.
The third and most serious scenario would be the obligation to implement financial sanctions by banks. Nelson points out that, so far, institutions such as Banco do Brasil have not been required to implement such measures, mainly due to the “weak legal basis” of existing sanctions.
Current context
The expert points out that the situation in Washington is momentarily affected by Charlie Kirk’s murder, which may have delayed some decisions.
However, it indicates that the US government is preparing for all possibilities.
Nelson also points out that the progress of sanctions may depend on the level of attention that Donald Trump dedicates to the Brazilian situation, considering that he has been one of the main drivers of these measures.
The final decision on which sanctions will be implemented must be influenced by the domestic political scenario in the United States.
