Caio Bonfim won on Friday (12) the silver medal in the 35 km race of the Athletic March at the World Championship played in Tokyo, Japan.
After being in a second platoon just behind the leaders for most of the race, the Brazilian used the tiredness of the opponents in the final stretch, taking the opportunity to jump from fifth to second place in the last kilometers.
He crossed the arrival line at the Tokyo National Stadium with a time of 2h28m55.
It is the third medal of the 34 -year -old from Sobradinho (DF) in Worlds, and the first in the 35 km race.
He had already been bronze in the 20 km race at the London World Cup in 2017, and Budapest in 2023, a distance in which he also won the silver medal at Paris Games.
The gold was from Canadian Evan Dunfee (2h28m22), with Japanese Hayato Katsuki (2h29m16) completing the podium.
In the female category, the Spanish María Pérez García earned her third gold in worlds, with the time of 2h39m01. She had already won the athletic march proof at the 20 km and 35 km distances at the Budapest World Cup in 2023.
The silver was from Italian Antonella Palmisano (2h42m24), and the bronze of Ecuadorian Paula Torres (2h42m44). Brazilian Viviane Lyra arrived in 13th position, with the time of 2h51m16.
