Portugal off the podium: Get to know the list of countries with the best wines in 2025

The latest results from Decanter World Wine Awards revealed which countries stood out in wine production. The list confirms global diversity and shows that while Portugal remains well positioned, other countries have won the highest places. For those who enjoy wine, countries of different continents have demonstrated quality in all categories of the competition.

The contest, considered one of the most prestigious in the sector, evaluates thousands of labels in blind events. The wines are then classified into categories ranging from bronze to best in show, reflecting only quality and performance before international juries.

The beginning of the ranking

Among the least usual countries in this competition is the United Kingdom, which reached 15th position with 188 medals. Slovenia emerged shortly after 211 distinctions, highlighting regions such as Primorska and Podradje.

Greece occupied 13th position with 242 medals, including 20 in top categories. The United States were in 12th place, totaling 294 awards and highlighting the California and Oregon wines.

Ascension outside Europe

New Zealand appears in 11th place, winning 303 medals, while Chile was 10th, with 334 distinctions. Both reinforce the growing reputation of the southern hemisphere in the wine sector.

Canada occupied 9th position with 347 medals, highlighting Icewine’s productions. Croatia managed to surprise by reaching 8th place, totaling 386 distinctions.

The intermediate places

Argentina maintained tradition and appeared in 7th place, with 428 medals, many of them attributed to Malbecs from the Mendoza region. South Africa occupied the 6th position with 487 awards, supported by regions such as Stellenbosch.

It is at this point that Portugal enters, which reached 5th place. The country won 554 medals, including 52 in more prestigious categories, especially regions such as Douro, Dão and Alentejo.

The final podium

Australia was in 4th place, totaling 643 medals and reinforcing the weight of regions such as Margaret River and McLaren Vale. The podium was occupied by three European countries that consolidated dominance in the sector.

In 3rd place came Spain, with 2,025 medals, followed by Italy, which won 2,204 distinctions and 2nd place. At the top of the list was France, with an impressive total of 3,220 medals, consolidating the status of largest wine producer of excellence in 2025.

A GLOBAL VISION

The show list that wine remains a shared cultural expression in different countries, with local traditions to be present in international events. Even out of the podium, Portugal remains among the big ones, reinforcing the prestige of national production in the world market.
