The Turkish police detained other politicians associated with the opposition

In Turkey, the pressure on the opposition is increasing: the mayor of Bayrampaşa from CHP was detained by the police for an investigation into corruption. CHP rejects the accusations and talks about political motives.

The Turkish authorities, as part of an investigation into corruption, ordered the detention of the mayor of the Istanbul district of Bayrampaš and other persons associated with the opposition. On Saturday, Reuters reported, TASR writes.

Turk’s TRT television added that the police on Saturday morning had a raid in 72 places to secure documents and detain suspects of various acts, including fraud, bribery and tenders.

In the post on the X -Network, the Mayor of Bayrampaša Hasan Mutlu from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) said he had nothing to hide and refused all the suspicion. He described the investigation against him as “a political operation based on unfounded defamation”.

The campaign is to be aimed at weakening

The new detention of opposition officials took place within the year of the year and increasing pressure on the CHP, which were detained and dozens of members of this party were investigated. CHP, which in the municipal elections in 2024 achieved a significant victory over the ruling party of justice and development (AKP) President Recep Tayipp Erdogan and its popularity continues to rise, claiming to be the victim of a politically motivated government campaign aimed at weakening before the future elections.

The step has triggered demonstrations

The Assembly of 10 September was also attended by CHP chairman Özgür Özel, who described the court’s decision to be politically motivated. The police used tear gas in the protests and detained several demonstrators. At the hearing scheduled for 15 September, there is a risk of appealing from office as well as Chairman of CHP Özel.

On the basis of allegations of corruption and other reasons, in March, the mayor of Istanbul’s function was dismissed by the Ekrem of Imamoglu, who wanted to run for CHP in the presidential election and is considered observers as the only real challenger of Erdogan.
