World distance jump record holder, Mike Powell, who is currently working as a coach, was suspended indefinitely due to a safeguard concern, the athletics unit of integrity (AIU) said on Friday (12).
Twice Olympic silver medalist, Powell established the 8.95 meter leap in the 1991 World Cup in Tokyo – a brand that remains today.
AIU said the 61 -year -old is prohibited from all activities sanctioned by. This includes accreditation at world series events, as well as competitions and tournaments organized or approved by the entity.
Powell is also prevented from attending hospitality areas or restricted access places linked to world series events, even if they are invited. AIU stated that the suspension may be modified upon request or appeal.
Indefinite suspension
Powell was part of the coaching staff of Azusa Pacific University during the 2023 season, in the middle of time, and left office in 2024 for another job, said Marcus Dawal, director of sports information of the institution.
Powell and were not immediately located by Reuters to comment on the case.
What is “safeguard concern”?
In the sports context, the expression refers to protection measures of people involved in the sport (athletes, coaches, etc.), ensuring safe environments, free from abuse, exploration, harassment, neglect or any kind of physical, emotional or psychological damage.
AIU, however, did not clarify what Powell would have done to motivate the suspension.
