One student was locked at home for two days after witnessing the murder of, concerned about returning to the University of Utah Valley campuses in the United States, where the conservative activist was shot. Another student, unable to sleep or forget what she saw and heard, called her father to take her home.

While investigators spend the weekend further investigating suspect Tyler James Robinson before his first hearing on Tuesday, 16, students who witnessed Wednesday’s shooting deal with trauma, pain and sadness the attack caused in his community.

On Thursday, 11, calmed some fears. Still, doubts persist about the suspect’s motive and planning, as well as about the safety failures that allowed a man with a rifle to throw a roof kirk before fleeing.

The university reported that security will be reinforced when classes are resumed next Wednesday.

Cars circulated through the nearby streets on Saturday, honking, displaying American flags and messages like “We love you, Charlie”, “Charlie Forever” and “Rest in Peace, Charlie.”

In the area where the activist was shot, a team began to dismantle tents and banners and clean the traces of the murder.

Student Alec Vera stopped at the memorial after finally leaving home on Friday night to get around and lighten the mind. Vera said she was stunned, unable to focus and avoiding people, since she saw Kirk fall about 12 meters in front of her.

“I just felt the need to come here, to be with everyone, either to comfort or be comforted, just to surround me with those who are also in mourning,” said Vera.

A woman knelt down, sobbing. Others were silent or talking softly. In the perimeter of the campus, trees were wrapped in red ribbons.

During the shooting, some cars were abandoned in the parking lot by students, and remained there. One student begged a police officer to let him take his bike across the police ribbon and smiled when the policeman let him pass.

The university said people can get their belongings early next week.
