The Superior Bassist, singer, songwriter, producer and teacher Esperanza Spalding will be one of the main attractions of the 2nd edition of the Brazil Style Festival, which starts on September 21 at the Ulysses Convention Center in Brasilia (DF). Recognized worldwide as one of the most inventive voices of contemporary jazz, Spalding combines musical talent with deep political engagement, connecting art to social and environmental struggles.
Born in Portland, Oregon, Esperanza discovered the vocation for music at age 4, inspired by the Yo-Yo Ma. Daughter of African-American father and Latin mother, received the Castilian name that means “hope.”
Influenced early on by Soul, Jazz, Mambos, Boleros and Brazilian Music, including Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento and João Bosco, Spalding developed a style that moves between technical virtuosity and social sensitivity.
The artist’s political engagement connects directly with Brazil. In an interview, she commented on the support for indigenous struggle and the risks of the temporal framework, arguing that music can give society courage to mobilize.
“I don’t think the song itself has some kind of strength. But listening to the right song can give you courage and energy to go out and appear. Giving my voice and being solidarity will help us,” he said.
Spalding relates Brazilian music to his own nature: “The music that grows here is loaded with the same kind of influence as the Amazon. We are all extensions of the earth,” he said.
It stresses that positioning is not only symbolic: it is concrete solidarity with indigenous communities and a warning about global environmental destruction.
An example of this political and artistic engagement is the song “not to the time frame”, in which Spalding denounces threats to the rights originating from native populations and connects musical language to a shared historical struggle between Brazil and the United States against systems of inequality and colonial exploitation.
