The director of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Viegas, said on Monday, 15, that the US government appointment is that the visas not yet granted to the members of the Brazilian delegation are in processing. Viegas said he has no reason to “think the United States will not follow their legal obligations” regarding the granting of visas.

“The nomination of the United States government is that the (views) that have not yet been granted are in the process of processing. I have no way to speculate on what the result of this processing will be, it is a sovereign prerogative of the United States to grant or not, even though the granting of visas to go to the UN there is a clearly established obligation in the US Visas,” this Monday.

According to him, “any measure that does not according to that established in the agreement is a legal violation.” Nevertheless, he stressed: “We have no reason to think that the United States will not follow its legal obligations regarding the granting of visas.”

Viegas said a meeting was held last Friday, 12, to discuss the issue of visas. The main point for this meeting was the case of Palestine, as the United States government announced in August the revocation of the visas of members of the Palestinian Authority on the grounds that it would be supported by Hamas’s “terrorism”.

“There is a Committee of Relations with the State Headquartered in the United Nations, which met last Friday. Brazil is not a member of the Committee, but participated in this session, and raised concerns about non-compliance with state obligations regarding the granting of visas,” Viegas told journalists on Monday. “This meeting was called specifically to deal with the case of Palestine, which is an observant state, not a member state, but is also covered by the prerogatives of the headquarters agreement, and several leaders have expressed its rejection of the adoption of any measure that is not in accordance with the headquarters agreement,” he added.

The director of the Itamaraty Department of International Organisms also said he had no information on whether the Brazilian delegation will be smaller this year compared to other years. The questioning is due to the deterioration of the Brazilian government’s relationship with that of the United States, led by Donald Trump.
