The artist died on Saturday (13), at the age of 89, due to multiple organ bankruptcy. The ceremony will be open to the public between 14h and 21h. The musician will be veiled in the space that bears his name, located in Praça 1st of May, near the Jabour neighborhood, where he lived much of his life.

Considered a genius of experimental music, Hermeto was known for turning everyday sounds into art, from the noise of water to the wind breath. His career crossed borders, with international collaborations and world recognition. Throughout life, he received several awards, including three Latin Grammy statuettes.

Hermeto Pascoal’s trajectory

Born in 1936 in Alagoas, Hermeto Pascoal faced early on the limitations of strabismus and albinism. As a child, he improvised sounds with the materials he found and, at age 10, already played accordion, one of his first instruments.

At 14, he started his career on radio. In the 1960s, he formed the Som Quatro group, standing out in the wind instruments, such as the flute. Later, he also dedicated himself to the piano and joined an orchestra in João Pessoa.

In the 1970s, he spent a season in the United States, where he participated in international festivals, and in 1973 returned to Brazil to release his first solo album in the country, Hermeto Pascoal’s free music. Throughout his career, Hermeto was recognized worldwide. He received the title of Doctor Honoris Cause from Juilliard in New York in 2023 and won three times the Latin Grammy.

His last presentation in Brazil took place in June 2025. Reserved, the musician canceled some shows last year, but did not publicly reveal details about his health.
