Mercado’s growth process in Portugal does not slow down. After consolidating the presence on the coast and some district capitals, the Spanish insignia turns to the interior of the country. The company has already defined the next location where it will raise a store, reinforcing its national expansion strategy.
The chosen city is located in downtown southern Portugal, in the middle of Alentejo region. We talk about Beja, the headquarters of municipality and capital of the largest district of the country, a large territory that extends from the Atlantic, more precisely from the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, to the Spain border line, where it plays both Andalusia and Extremadura.
Within the limits of the county, there are neighboring locations such as Serpa, Mértola, Castro Verde, Vidigueira, Cuba, Aljustrel and Ferreira do Alentejo, which reinforces the city’s central role in regional dynamics. According to the newspaper A Plain, it is precisely in the city of Beja that Mercado plans to open its new store in 2026, becoming the second unit of the insignia in Alentejo, after Évora, inaugurated in 2024.

According to the same source, the opening is expected to take place in the future Retail Park currently under construction between the Esperança neighborhood and the Apolinarians Road, in front of the current Beja Retail Park.
Writes the newspaper that, besides the market, the space should host other brands of great distribution, such as Popular Radio and Action Discount Store, although the complete list of badges has not yet been officially confirmed.
Expansion has continued since 2019
Adds the publication that the installation in this Alentejo city represents a symbolic step on the way started in 2019, the year the Mercado inaugurated the first store in Portugal. Since then, the network has been consistently expanding, betting on different location profiles.
The newspaper also states that, on the brand’s social networks, several customers have asked about the possibility of opening a store in the Algarve, but for now, the company does not give concrete answers
Algarve remains in analysis
The newspaper explains that, in May, raised the issue directly to support to the customer of the Mercado, suggesting the hypothesis of installation at Nova Vila Retail Park, in Portimão.
The answer left the scenario open: “We currently do not have an opening information from one of our stores in Portimão, however, we are expanding and always considering new locations.” Thus, although the focus is now on Alentejo, the Algarve continues to be pointed out as a region with potential for future inaugurations, keeping alive the expectation of new stores in the south of the country.
