United States President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against the New York Times, four newspaper journalists and Penguin Random House, asking for at least $ 15 billion (R $ 79.8 billion) in indemnity for defamation and slander. The action was filed on Monday (15) in a Federal Court of Florida, according to the agency Reuters.
Trump’s defense quotes a series of NYT articles, including an editorial published before the 2024 elections that classified it as unfit for office, besides the book Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success (Lucky loser: As Donald Trump wasted his father’s fortune and created the illusion of success, in free translation), released by Penguin in the same year.
“The defendants maliciously published the book and the articles knowing that they were full of disorders and manufactures about President Trump,” says the document presented to the court.

Lawyers claim that publications have caused significant damage to Trump’s personal and business reputation, with relevant economic impact on their business. The process cites as an example the devaluation of Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) actions. The paper has been under pressure since the end of the restriction period for sale, started after the company’s debut in March.
“Today I have the great honor of opening a $ 15 billion process for defamation and slander against New York Times,” Trump wrote in his social network. He accused the newspaper of lying about his family, his business and republican movements like Make America Great Again.
The process occurs days after Trump threatens to process NYT for reports related to Jeffrey Epstein, a sexual crimes who died in 2019 in a New York prison. The president claims to have cut ties with Epstein before the start of lawsuits in 2006. Newspaper reports question this version, and show a strong bond between the two, which would have continued to be best friends.
