It is very healthy, has a sweet taste and fits perfectly with e.g. coffee or desserts. Pea milk, because we are talking about it, is a great product that few people still reach for. It slowly begins to change – and rightly so.
Pea milk is made of yellow peas – a well -known and valued legume. Peas are subjected to biotechnological treatment, during which starch undergoes enzymatic conversion. This allows you to get a natural sweet taste, without the need to add artificial substances. Thanks to this, pea milk does not contain lactose, but its consistency and taste bring to mind cow’s milk.
Interestingly, Pea milk has a very low carbon trailespecially if we compare them even to almond milk, whose production requires much more water. Growing peas is also very beneficial for soil, because this plant improves its quality by binding nitrogen. It can be safely stated that the choice of pea milk is also good for the planet.
If you want to try this vegetable alternative to cow’s milk, you don’t have to reach for a store product. How to make pea milk at home? Nothing simpler.
The following ingredients will be needed:
- 1 cup of yellow shell pea,
- 3-4 cups of water,
- a pinch of salt,
- Optional: 2 tablespoons of honey, any aroma.
Start by rinsing the peas and flooding it with cold water. Leave it for 8 hours, preferably for the whole night.
Then pour the water from soaking, pour the peas with fresh water and cook until tender. Strain and set aside to cool.
Put the peas into the blender bowl, pour in water (3 or 4 cups, depending on what consistency you care about), blend exactly for a few minutes.
Pour the resulting liquid through gauze or a very small sieve to separate milk from the remains of peas.
You can leave ready pea milk as it is or season, adding honey or cinnamon.
Is pea milk healthy? Definitely yes.
This plant drink supports the body at many levels. First of all, pea milk has a lot of protein (3 g per 100 ml), which may also be interested in people who avoid meat who need other sources of protein in the diet. In this aspect, it is worth comparing a pea drink to other plant options – more protein has only soy milk (3.2 g per 100 ml). Almond milk has only 0.9 g, while oatmeal 0.4 g. These are definitely less valuable sources of protein.
In addition, peas also contain a lot of fiber, thanks to which it supports proper digestion and makes us feel full longer. Importantly, Pea milk has much less fat than cow and more calcium, so – by choosing this alternative – we support bone health and the proper functioning of the heart.
The advantages of pea milk also include a lack of lactose and gluten, which will please people with intolerances and a low glycemic index. Light digestible, sweet and healthy – pea milk is a product that is definitely worth reaching for.
