It announced it in May the production of the Brazilian series, which portrays what marked the history of Goiânia in 1987. The decision to record most of the scenes in São Paulo generated criticism from the Goiânia Municipal Council of Culture, which published a letter to demonstrate “deep dissatisfaction” with production.

“The tragedy has left marks that are still part of the daily life and identity of our city. Telling this story without looking at the place where it really happened is to remove from it the deepest truth: the memory of the people who lived it,” the organ said.

A dismantled hospital device in a junkyard 38 years ago resulted in the spread of 19 grams of cesium-137 by the capital of Goiás. The episode is considered the largest radiological accident in history outside a nuclear plant, with four confirmed deaths and more than a thousand people affected by radiation in the city.

The text also points out that it is able to receive productions of this size, with qualified professionals, infrastructure and real locations. “Bringing the shoot here would not only be justice to our history, but also generate jobs, move the local economy and strengthen Brazilian culture with more true and representativeness,” says the letter.

Created by Gustavo Lipsztein and directed by Fernando Coimbra, the series follows the performance of doctors and physicists in the race to save thousands of lives during contamination. The cast has names such as Paulo Gorgulho and Tuca Andrada.

In the document, the advice calls the platform to reconsider the locations of the recordings, which began in June. “Therefore, we ask Netflix and the production to review this choice and give Goiânia the right space. Tell this story here, where she was born and still pulsates,” says the council.

Netflix and producer Gullane, responsible for the series, were sought and did not speak until the publication of this article.
