Winter garlic is a vegetable that is ideal for Polish gardens. Its cultivation is not complicated, but requires knowledge of a few rules that determine the size of the heads and the quality of the collections.

Garlic grows best in fertile, humus and permeable soile.g. sandy-glinic. The substrate should be moist, but not wet, because the plant has a shallow root system and tolerates drought badly. Sunness is also important. In a well -lit place, the heads will reach larger sizes. Avoid planting garlic in a place where other onion plants have grown in recent years. This increases the risk of diseases and pests, especially nematodes.

1. Soil preparation. Before planting, it is worth enriching the soil with compost. The manure is best used a year earlier.
2. Choice of teeth. We only choose healthy, hard and prosperous. Rede the soft or damaged heads.
3. Depth and spacing. Place the teeth at a depth of 6-8 cm, which protects them from freezing. The distance between them should be 6_10 cm, and we plant the rows every 25-30 cm.
4. Watering. After planting the bed, water should be well. In autumn it is worth controlling soil moisture, especially in dry weather.
5. Mulching. We spread a layer of straw, leaves or bark on the surface of the earth. Thanks to this, we will limit water evaporation, weed development and provide additional nutrients.
6. Set. Winter garlic usually harvests in the second half of July. If we take care of the planting date, proper soil and systematic watering in spring (especially from May to June, when the plant forms the heads), the yields will be really impressive.

The best time to plant winter garlic is from mid -September to around October 20. During this period, the plant will root well before the arrival of winter, and in spring it will quickly start vegetation. If we are late with the date and put the teeth later, the yields may be smaller and less good. It is worth knowing that garlic planted in autumn usually gives better and previous harvest than the one blown up in spring. The first green leaves can appear as early as February, and with a gentle winter, even in January.
