The Russian Air Force Mig-31
Estonia requires “immediate political pressure”. It is NATO’s third country to report Russian airspace violations in just over a week.
Three Mig-31 Russian fighters entered Estonia airspace this Friday, having approached the capital, Tallinn, in an action that is being pointed out as the third attempt this month of testing the eastern border of the NATO.
The Mig-31 are heavy intercetors, capable of transporting the hypersonic Kinzhal missile. They circulated for about 12 minutes, before Italian jets F-35 were mobilized to repel them from stoned airspace.
The Estonian government reacted rapidly and firmly and summoned Russia’s business officer in Tallinn. Classifies the incident as something “Unfolded”.
“Russia has violated the stoned airspace four times this year, which is unacceptable in itself, but today’s violation, during which three fighters have entered our airspace, is brutally unprecedented,” said Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, quoted by the newspaper.
“Russia’s growing border tests and aggression should be answered with a rapid reinforcement of political and economic pressure,” said the official of the executive.
The incident is the latest of a sequence of Russian raids in NATO countries in recent days. Last week, Russian drones violated the airspace of and Romania.
In Warsaw, more than a dozen drones were detected at night, with some heading to the Rlezów Strategic Center. The polacal forces, with the support of NATO allies, several units and invoked Article 4 of NATOwhich requires consultations on threats to the safety of a member state. Drone drivers would be Belarusians, and were arrested.
It was precisely together with its greatest ally Belarus that Russia, last Friday, a large-scale military exercise that brought memories from the beginning of the war in Ukraine: the Sapadwhich is carried out four years after, in 2021, it serves as a preparation for the Russian attack on the neighboring nation that triggered the ongoing war.
Romania also registered repeated violations, including a drone followed for almost 50 minutes in its airspace in mid -September. Fragments of anterior Russian attacks in Ukraine have occasionally fallen into Romanian territory.
On Friday, the president of the European Commission announced a New Round of Sanctions Against Russian energy and financial transactions, condemning the recent violations of the European Union airspace.
“The President [Vladimir] Putin has repeatedly intensified the pressure and, in response, Europe is increasing its pressure ”said Ursula von der Leyen. “We know that our sanctions are an effective tool for economic pressure and we will continue to use them until Russia feels at the negotiation table.”
This Friday, Kiev also left a warning to Portugal: It has until 1 January 2027 to stop importing Russian gas, such as seven other EU Member States, if the new sanctions package is approved.
However, about the war in Ukraine, Kiev clarified that there are no ongoing peace negotiations with Russia.
