A forgotten royal castle discovered on a Scottish island

Archaeologists claim that the “forgotten” Castle, discovered on a Hebrid island, could have been the residence of the kings who once reigned over much of the western Scotland.

Scientists believe that the fortress, built on two small islands on Lake Finlaggan on Isles Island, belonged to the royal family over 700 years ago.

Among their descendants were the leaders of the Macdonald clan, known as the Lords of the islands. These Lords turned Finlaggan into their basis of operations, from which they controlled the islands of Hebride, Aryll and parts of the northwest Highlands, reports Noi.mdwith reference to.

Archaeologists took almost 30 years to study Finlaggan to better understand his place in the kingdom of the islands and the older history of this place. The remains of a castle dating from the XII-XIII centuries were discovered, before the lords came to power.

Interestingly, the Castle had a rectangular stone tower, where there were living rooms, the courts, the kitchens, a large room where the fees and a chapel with a funeral place.

Archaeologists said the Anglo-French kings in the UK and Ireland were known for the construction of rectangular towers and assumed that the Finlaggan tower was built as a symbol of power and wealth.

They believe that the castle was probably demolished due to the uncertainty of the construction or damage suffered as a result of enemy attacks.
