Thousands of people evacuated on Saturday night from their Hong Kong homes for the finding of an unexploded bomb from World War II, which was subsequently destroyed until Saturday noon pyrotechnics. Operation for deactivating the charge began on Friday late in the evening and lasted until about Saturday to 11.30 pm local time, giving it without any injuries, TASR writes based on AP report.
Local police reported that the 1.5-meter bomb of American production weighed approximately 450 kilograms. It was discovered on Friday by workers at the construction site in the busy commercial and residential district of Quarry Bay in the west of Hong Kong. It contained more than 226 kilograms of explosive. For the “extremely high risks associated with its liquidation”, according to the police, approximately 1900 households and thus about 6,000 people were invited to accelerate the evacuation.
Hong Kong has been intensively bombarded with allied troops during the last years of World War II when it was occupied by Japan. Thus, unexploded bombs in its territory appear from time to time.
