Meeting will take place in New York and will be held amid negotiations in the South American country to receive a US Treasury loan
The Argentine president will maintain a bilateral meeting with on Tuesday (23) in New York, amid negotiations from the South American country to receive a loan from the United States Treasury, the presidency of Argentina said on Saturday. “Javier Milei will keep on Tuesday morning in New York City, a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump,” says the presidential house’s official statement. The meeting is “within the milestone of the solid bilateral relationship between countries, and the shared commitment to follow the strategic ties between the government and the Trump administration,” the note adds.
Milei said on Friday that the negotiations are “very advanced” to receive a loan from the United States that will enable reserves to face debt salaries, in a journey in which he stated that “political panic” triggered a storm in markets. On Friday (19), at Banco Nación-Argentina’s largest public bank-the dollar closed quoted to 1,515 pesos (R $ 5.47) and surpassed the ceiling of the government’s exchange rate fluctuation.
The rise of the dollar forced the Central Bank to intervene in the market, selling $ 678 million ($ 3.61 billion) to avoid a shot of the US currency. Since Wednesday, it accumulates $ 1.110 billion ($ 5.9 billion) sold. During September, the weight devalued 12.67%. There is “political panic that is spiralizing in the market and generating enormous uncoordination in terms of paine risk,” said the president in his speech on Friday on the Cordoba Stock Exchange.
Milei defended his economic program, at a time when he faces his worst political crisis after losing, in early September, the legislatures in the province of Buenos Aires, the most populous of Argentina, for the peronist opposition. In just over a month, it will face the national legislative elections.
