The same announcements were released immediately before Starmer by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Starmer already announced in July that the United Kingdom would recognize Palestinian statehood unless Israel is taking “essential” steps, including reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
It is expected that several other states, including France, will follow at the upcoming UN General Assembly. At the same time, the Palestinian state recognizes a total of more than 140 countries in the world, which are more than two thirds of the UN members. In May and June this year, Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Norway joined them.

“If the countries that have signed this declaration really want to stabilize the region, they should instead focus on the pressure on (Palestinian militant movement) Hamas to release hostages and immediately disarm,” the ministry added. “This step is contrary to all the logic of the negotiations and the compromise between the two parties and even more delay the achievement of the desired peace,” stated the Ministry of Diplomacy.
