Dry inflorescences do not look bad at hydrangeas, on the contrary – they are a wonderful decoration of the winter garden. However, you need to consider not only the appearance of plants, but also their health. The gardener says that some bushes need to be cut, while others do not require this procedure. We present the most important information about cutting these specimens.
Pruning is an important care treatment for every bushes, including hydrangea. Thanks to it, they are stimulated to release new, strong shoots. Therefore, the specimen and release of more flowers are growing.
Hydrangeas also need pruning when we want to give them the desired shape or get rid of old, infected and frozen parts. Then they are better illuminated, which contributes to strengthening the bushes and releasing many large inflorescences.
Pruning must be made on specimens that have fungal diseases or pests. In this way, we prevent them from spreading. We will therefore protect healthy parts of plants.
The gardener also says when you do not need to cut hydrangea. Well It is better to leave dry inflorescences on plants growing in cooler regions of Poland. Then they will have better protection against frost. Cutting should be carried out on such specimens in spring.

Not all shrubs are cut the same. We must be careful when carrying out this procedure on varieties blooming on last year’s shoots (those that tied flowers on shoots from the previous season). I am talking about garden, oak and climbing hydrangea. Then, above the first set of leaves, we only remove dry inflorescences. If we get rid of whole branches, then we will lose a lot of buds.
The situation is different in the case of specimens flowering on this year’s shoots, i.e. bouquet, woody, and played hydrangea. In their case, we can cut up to 15-20 cm above the ground. Most plants can be cut both in autumn and spring, although gardeners recommend spring pruning, as soon as the covers are removed after winter.
Remember that When pruning all plants, use sharp and clean pruning shears. A dirty tool can cause fungal diseases, and blunt – damage shoots and weaken the whole bush. Let’s cut at an angle to prevent water stasis in the wound, because it will cause rot.
All hydrangeas need nutrients after pruning. These bouquet and shrubs need to be fed with fertilizers rich in potassium and phosphorus – in spring an additional nitrogen. In turn, for garden hydrangea, we choose.
After the procedure performed in the spring, the bushes need moderate watering. Their soil should be slightly moist, but uninterrupted, because they endure water stagnation badly.
We do not water the hydrangea in winter, but It is worth protecting them against frost. Sprinkle the roots with pine bark, and wrap the whole plant with agrotextile.
